Sharon Robinson-Briggs has the distinct honor of being the first female mayor of the city of Plainfield. Sharon is a graduate of Seton Hall University, majoring in Political Science/Criminal Justice. She is past president of the Plainfield Board of Education, and past president of the Plainfield Branch of the NAACP. Working with the Union County Prosecutor's Office and the State Police, Plainfield has seen a significant reduction in crime. Following her vision of unity, Sharon has established a Welcome Desk at City Hall, created a "Community Garden" for all the residents and a "Feed the Children" program that has provided groceries to approximately 500 families.
A true ambassador of the city, Sharon stays in touch with the residents working well beyond the required hours; often well into the weekend, fulfilling her promises through dedication, compassion and commitment. While meeting with block associations, religious groups, fraternal organizations, unions, youth groups, business groups, senior organizations, and elected officials, Sharon presented her vision of economic growth for Plainfield. Taking the oath of office as Mayor in 2006; Sharon began to realize her vision of ‘Growth by Unity'! Her sensitivity, compassion, leadership, and confidence have united the city in a variety of ways. She supports the citizenry in their projects, programs, and functions. Having been past president of the Plainfield Board of Education, Sharon understands the importance of education, and can often be found in the schools, encouraging youngsters, being a role model for them, frequently reading to kindergarten and elementary school children.
As mayor of Plainfield, she has participated in NJ Sharing Network’s $1.67 million grant to research the most effective methods to promote organ and tissue donation in the workplace. Funded by the Division of Transplantation of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the project aims to significantly increase the rate of organ and tissue donor registration as well as the number of family discussions about organ donation among employees in New Jersey. The project is a collaborative endeavor with NJ Sharing Network and leading researchers from Purdue University. The former NJ Sharing Network Community Relations Manager began her relationship with the organ and tissue recovery agency as a volunteer community partner and liaison to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The Seton Hall University graduate is always passionate about her pursuits.
